Happy 2015 from the Great Plains Trail Alliance! We’re excited about this year because we have some projects underway that we hope will help to put the Great Plains Trail “on the map,” so to speak. I’m not going to say anything more about them right now because I’m just superstitious enough not to want to jinx it, but do stay tuned . . . !
OK. Lately, I’ve been seeing “news stories” here and there about 2015 being the year when Back to the Future Part II was set. The film was made in 1989, and it’s been 25 years since the film came out, and people are looking around to see if the predictions in the film about hover boards and other things came true, and blah, blah, blah . . .
Who cares?
I say, let’s make 2015 about something more meaningful than whether or not a fictional story out of Hollywood can accurately see into the future. Let’s be more real.
Let’s make 2015 the Year of the Great Plains!
I know, it’s a grand statement, but I’m making it anyway. What I’m suggesting is for anyone who has never experienced the Great Plains (and driving across it does not count), this is the year to do it. If you are already a lover of the Great Plains, then this is the year to get out there more often. Deal? OK.
All throughout this year, I will be suggesting trips and places to go that are reasonably accessible and user friendly. Many of them I have written about before, and many of them will be crossed by the Great Plains Trail, but this year my goal is not so much to inform, but to encourage you to visit and explore.
If you live in more coastal regions, far from the Great Plains, and you have a cross country trip planned, take an extra day and see some of the grandeur of the
plains. Or, if you’re really brave, be the first one on your block to book an airline ticket to Scottsbluff. Your friends will be confused and amazed, but brag about it loudly anyway. Remember, anyone can go to Hawaii, California, Florida, and what’s more, everyone has. Big deal. Be different! Be on the cutting edge! Be a part of the Year of the Great Plains!

These is a great post on the GPTA website. It gives a good idea of what the trail might look like upon completion.
Okay, you convinced me. I’m in.
Ha! What’s your route this August? I’ll give you some ideas.
I usually head for the mountains but there is something about those big skies and open spaces…
