Oglala National Grassland and Great Plains Trail Alliance are hosting a casual hike of the new trail section at Toadstool Geologic Park. Here are the basics:
What: A five mile loop hike beginning and ending at the Toadstool Campground. Join representatives from GPTA as well as Nebraska National Forest and Oglala National Grassland as we hike the new Great Plains Trail segment. The new trail connects to the established Bison Trail to complete the loop. The hike will be moderate to strenuous depending on experience and fitness. Anyone who wants to do a shorter hike can simply turn back and hike out at their convenience. Please pack a lunch and we can relax in the shade at the campground after the hike. Bring plenty of water as well!
Where: Toadstool Campground, Oglala National Grassland – 19 miles north of Crawford, Nebraska on Toadstool Road.
When: Saturday, September 22 (National Public Lands Day) Meet at the campground at 9:00 am.
Who: Open to anyone who can make it.
Why: It’s a “grand opening” of sorts for the new trail segment at Toadstool. This segment provides another hiking option in the park as well as adding trail for the GPT while shortening the route to Orella Road to the north.
How: A big thanks to the ONG staff and ranger Mike Watts for making this trail a reality!
Hope to see you there!
